Why are DfID funding TUC?

This email from the IPN came as somewhat of a shock today. Turns out I'm a fully paid up member of the TUC and so are all of you...
In a report in 2009, International Policy Network disclosed that between 2003 and 2006 the Trades Union Congress received over £1.2 in taxpayers' money ostensibly intended for promoting development in poor countries. A significant amount of this money - which came from the UK Department for International Development (an entity created by the Labour Party in 1997) - was spent in the UK on activities that do not seem to have yielded any practical benefit to the poor either inside or outside of Britain.

Subsequently, IPN discovered that the TUC was recently granted a further £2.4 million by DfID for the period 2009 - 2011.

The new support to the TUC comes from funds intended for large international development NGOs with a track record in poor countries. It’s unclear why this trend has been broken to fund a British trades union.

To make matters worse, unions that are members of the TUC represent over half the funding of the Labour Party. Since the DfID grants to the TUC come with few constraints, it is possible that DfID's money could essentially substitute for money that would otherwise come from member unions - freeing them up to give more to the Labour Party.

Seriously, can our Government become any more corrupt?

Sadly the answer is probably yes.

What's infuriating is that this isn't really 'new'. NuLab have been siphoning money off to the unions, only for it to reappear in party coffers, for years now. The problem is that people either aren't pissed off enough, or the MP's expenses debacle has made the great British public run out of steam.

It's disgusting behaviour nonetheless. Unfortunately, the BBC is happy enough to report a Tory non-story about donations, but won't go anywhere near this one...

We are just regressing through time back to the 1970's.

Soon we will all be wearing flairs and afros with woollen tank tops.

And what is the matter with the way I dress ?

D'oh!

You may as well ask "Why are the TUC funding the party of government which decides how much the DfID gets and to whom it goes?"

Cranmer broke this news last year, autumn, I think. It's illegal of course, and while it might not be quite money laundering, it's not far off it, is it?

You may well ask that, but the answer is pretty obvious - it isn't. The TUC is not affiliated to Labour or any other political party, nor does it provide funding to any of them.

Ah, the petty, little nit-picking of the Labour luvvie, defending the indefensible.

No, the TUC doesn't fund Labour, but its members do, which gives the TUC so much clout with Labour.

Tom Powdrill, are you defending tha actioins of the Labour party ? Are you defending the actions of the TUC and/or its members/affiliates in the way this money was spent.

Yes or no will suffice, I don't need any tractor stats.

It's not nit-picking it's an important fact that critics of the unions very often get wrong.

And the answer to your question is YES. But then I'm a Labour member, a GMB member (which does fund Labour) and as I said a former TUC staffer so I am a bit biased.

here's a response the TUC to the original charge - http://www.touchstoneblog.org.uk/2009/09/right-wingers-attack-union-international-development-work/

btw I genuinely don't get the hostility of libertarians to TUs. I would have thought you would have liked the voluntary self-organised nature of them? historically left libertarians have been largely sympathetic I thought.

Trade unions are fine, as long as they are communicating directly with the employers.

When they run off to the state for favours, they lose all credibility.

@gary

especially when they "buy" those favours with our money - can we call it "laundered"? - to them by the people they are buying.

@Tom: we don't get many Labour Party members on the LPUK pages, so I'm curious how you ended up here?

I was once a leftist myself, until I figured out that the whole "left-right" paradigm was a fraud.

Took me a while, but I got there in the end.

Are you on the verge of a similar epiphany yourself? or are you co-intelpro?

Hola

There was a link from Iain Dale's blog.

Nope, not on the verge of any realignment, but I'm not uninterested in what libertarians have to say. I've always been sympathetic to left libertarian views. I blame Homage to Catalonia.
