I have always half jokingly referred to the Lib Dems as the Social Democrats in writing on various blogs I contribute to and in meetings of the Libertarian Party.
Sometimes I am asked to stop calling them that because it causes confusion.
The confusion I humbly submit is with the Lib Dems, who are a Social Democratic Party rooted in Marxist theology who have suborned both the word Liberal and the former Liberal Party.
In the National interest Clegg has opened discussions with the Tories about forming a coalition, the social democrat activists who make up the vast majority of the LibDems
, are and have always been Labour lite, they want to be soft and fuzzy Authoritarians, whilst not willing to mix with the working classes who like most socialist parties they secretly despise.
This morning some of my colleagues have been taking calls from classic Liberals inside the Lib Dems, who have seen the scales fall from their eyes as old labourites like Vince Cable and friends go cosying up to the fiscal reprobates in the Labour Party in the name of their party.
Some are actually quite shell shocked at both Clegg's and the Lib Dems behaviour.

I dont know why they're shell-shocked. Anybody would thought the Lib Dems were Liberal, rather than just plain Soc. Dems, must have been blind, deaf and dumb for years.
They're brand of liberty means "liberty as long as we agree with what you are doing." Interesting premise. Reminds me of something...
The old Liberal Party was social democratic. In fact the Social Democrat Party was to the Right of the old Liberal Party on some issues.
Social Democracy has with it the Authoritarian dimension.
Liberals, iirc, were more in favour of consent and voluntary action. I know this changed about 100 years ago, but that is probably due to the infection of Fabianism.
